CHAPTER CHAIR MESSAGE

Farewell Message from Paul Baratta, Chair (2023) - ASIS Boston Chapter

Happy New Year to all the members of the ASIS Boston Chapter.  This will be my last “Greeting from the Chair” as the 2023 Chapter Chair.

The Boston Chapter was founded 65-years ago in 1959.  It has a long history of serving security professionals in the Boston metro area and is recognized for its service to the community. After serving for 6 years as your Treasurer, Vice Chair, and the last 2-years as Chapter Chair, it is time for me to step down and allow for the new generation to begin. Financially, our Chapter is stronger than ever and will continue to offer state of the art training and seminars for members of ASIS.

I promised the current Board that I would serve as the Past Chapter Chair and assist at any level they want and need. I’ve also taken on the role as Membership Chair and will be working with the Chapter to grow our membership and focus on adding more young professionals. As I said in January of 2023, My time on the Board has been rewarding and one objective that I have had since joining the Board, is to grow our new membership with younger professionals.”

With the election of Kelsey Carnell, from Axis Communications as Chapter Chair, I turn over the position to an incredible and award winning young professional woman, who has volunteered to take on the role of Chair and will be supported by other young professionals in Elliot Perkins, from CellGate as Vice Chair, Matt Gagnon, from Axis Communications as Treasurer, and Jen Goba, from Massachusetts General Brigham as Secretary.

I can’t be prouder to have worked with everyone of them in Chapter volunteering activities and on the Board.  The ASIS Boston Chapter is in great hands to continue to be the best of the best in ASIS. It’s a great time for our Chapter and onto the next generation to build an incredible organization.
I would like to also recognize the help of many Chapter members and know that I will leave out some.  Steve Bertoni, Larry Smith, Bob McNulty, Joe Crowley, Marty Patenaude, Craig McQuade, Bonnie Michelman, Ashley Ditta, Jim Stankevich, Justin Tomilson, Steve Cannellos, Shannon Roddy, Juli Sampson. Rich Zupan, Stew Prue, Dave Corbin, and David Spector, and most recently Matt Thomas who has stepped up to help on the EXPO Committee.

Of course, there are many-many more, I know I missed.  I would like to especially thank Steve May and his team at Crescent Leaf Technologies, who maintains our website and all our EXPO needs and announcements. Steve’s team at Crescent Leaf has done an amazing job and has given the Chapter years of professional support and at times has acted as the “Chapter Historian” in getting our EXPO site up and running.

2023 was a great year for our chapter at the annual Boston Chapter New England Security EXO held at the Boxboro Regency hotel in Boxboro, Massachusetts.  We had a record turn-out and feedback from the event was very supportive and everyone is excited for the 2024 EXPO.

We look to our technology and solution partners to help with supporting our Chapter’s event and offer great learning experiences for those who attend. I will continue to serve on the EPXO Committee Chaired by Ashley Ditta and hope to see everyone there. We can’t hold an EXPO without the support of our technology and solution partners. We always look forward t meeting them in-person at in the technology pavilion and see the latest in security technology.  This year will be no different.

Our annual CPP/PSP/APP review was held again this year at Axis Communications and had 35 attendees preparing for their CPP/PSP/APP test. Thank you to all the instructors who took time out of their schedule to keeping our annual review as powerful and leads to successful completion and certification of many of our members. This year, we again had other Chapters send people, the reputation of the review is top notch.

The new board is planning some exciting meetings and lining up speakers for 2024.  As Membership Chair I would like to remind all members to make sure their ASIS membership is up to date for 2024.  If you know of anyone interested in joining, please encourage them to join the 32,000 members of ASIS and become part of the Boston Chapter’s.

My last meeting for 2023 was at Raso’s Bar and Grille in Medford for the Chapter annual Holiday Gathering and special thanks to Richie Raso and Thiago Teixeira for hosting a great event.  We had a very good attendance and got to catch up with a lot of Chapter members at a nice social event, with great drinks and food. Thank you, Richie, for supporting the Chapter.

In closing, I want to thank all members for trusting me to oversee the Chapter and serve on the Board since 2018. This is my 25th year as a member of ASIS.  I hope to see you all at the 2024 New England Security EXPO hosted by the ASIS Boston Chapter on May 9, 2024 at the Boxboro Regency - and to our technology and solution partners, please sign up for a booth now. And lastly, we can’t hold this premier event with out our sponsors. Please support us by sponsoring the event.

Thank you,

Paul Baratta
