Mitigating the Impact of Civil Unrest on Your Organization

This session examines the anatomy, participants, and evolution of civil unrest events, activist tactics used to infiltrate an organization during unrest, the use of social media in influencing public opinion and inciting violence, and how to successfully utilize security practices, social media, public safety partnerships, intelligence gathering, and negotiations to lessen the severity of an event. The session also conducts a case study of an actual targeted event experienced by the presenter’s organization including lessons learned.  

Speaker: Todd D. Miller, CPP, CHPA

Todd D. Miller CPP, CHPA, is the System Vice President of Security for SSM Health, consisting of 23 hospitals and 450+ outpatient clinics across Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma. He holds a degree from Miami of Ohio in Secondary Education and served as a Special Federal Officer with the FBI St. Louis Division Safe Streets Task Force prior to transitioning to SSM Health in 2015.

He is co-chair of the Greater St. Louis Healthcare Security Directors’ Association and a past contributor to the IAHSS Journal of Healthcare Protection Management. Miller speaks regularly around the country on such topics as workplace violence prevention, street gang awareness in the healthcare environment, illicit narcotics identification and use indicators, how to mitigate the impact of civil unrest on hospital operations, armed intruder response, situational awareness, and the value of security technology in proactive security operations.
