Taking a Closer Look at Redaction – Balancing Privacy and Efficient Security
Speaker: James Marcella, Axis Communications / New Board Inauguration
Join us for the 1st meeting of 2023 as we hold our 2023 board inauguration ceremony. Guest speaker, James Marcella (Axis Communications) will also present: Taking a Closer Look at Redaction - Balancing Privacy and Efficient Security.
Presentation Overview
Innovations in video surveillance improve public and private organizations’ abilities to protect assets and individuals and create an accurate repository of forensic information. The collection of this data includes Personal Identifiable Information that may be protected through regulatory compliance. While this continues to be a challenge for security professionals, video redaction has proven to be useful in balancing security while protecting personal privacy.
This session will discuss how technology helps mitigate data privacy risks using edge, server, and cloud methodologies. Legislation in the United States and the European Union will be discussed through case studies of GDPR compliance. We’ll also cover best practices, policies, and procedures around the deployment and use of video redaction solutions.

Keynote Speaker
James Marcella, Axis Communications
With over 20 years of experience at Axis Communications, I oversee industry associations for North American operations, including ASIS International and the Security Industry Association (SIA). I currently serve as a Community Vice President for three ASIS communities; School Safety and Security, Healthcare, and Commercial Real Estate. I also serve as the Chair of the Video and Vision Subcommittee at SIA, which focuses on standards activities for video surveillance.
Passionate about knowledge sharing within the security industry, I’ve participated in many educational and speaking opportunities at high-profile events, including GSX, ISC West, ISC East, and The Monitoring Association. Through my work with the SIA Education Committee, I taught a physical security technology course as an adjunct professor at Mercer Community College in New Jersey for the Systems Technology Associate in Applied Science Degree in Security Systems and Technologies. I’m proud to champion further industry education and certification, including SIA’s Certified Security Project Manager certification.
I joined Axis in 1997 as a business development manager for the company’s North American Application Developer Partner program. In this role, I was responsible for finding best-of-breed software developers to create applications for Axis’ network video products. I also oversaw business development growth in the K-12 and higher education market segments. Additionally, I managed the educational services department until 2013 and helped develop the Axis Academy educational program, which still exists today.
